The Ugly Truth About Cleanses
Jun 13, 2025
Every few months, a new cleanse trend takes over social media — promising weight loss, detoxification, and a miraculous reset of your health in just a few days. From juice cleanses and tea detoxes to expensive supplement packs, the idea is always the same: flush out the “toxins,” shed some kilos, and feel better fast.
But here’s the ugly truth: most cleanses are a waste of time, money, and in some cases, damaging to your health.
🚨 Your Body Already Has a Detox System
The liver, kidneys, lungs, and digestive system are constantly detoxing your body for free. You don’t need celery juice or a week of green smoothies to "flush out toxins" — you need proper hydration, adequate fiber, quality sleep, and enough protein to support the body's natural detoxification pathways.
🚫 Cleanses Often Starve the Body
Many cleanses are ultra-low in calories and protein. While you may lose weight, most of it will be water, muscle tissue, and glycogen — not fat. This can leave you feeling tired, cranky, bloated, and even weaker in the gym. Worse still, extreme restrictions can trigger binge-eating episodes once the cleanse ends, creating a destructive cycle.
💩 The “Bathroom Effect” Isn’t a Detox
Let’s clear this up: laxative-induced bowel movements aren’t signs of detox — they’re signs of irritation and water loss. If your cleanse has you glued to the toilet, that’s not health, that’s dehydration and mineral imbalance in disguise.
🔄 The Rebound is Real
When you under-eat for days and then return to your normal diet, your body often rebounds with cravings, water retention, and even more fat storage. Most people gain back the weight (and sometimes more) shortly after finishing a cleanse, leading to frustration and a false sense of failure.
✅ What Actually Works
Instead of chasing the next quick fix, focus on the fundamentals:
-
Eat enough protein to support your metabolism and recovery
-
Get at least 25–35g of fiber daily from whole foods
-
Sleep 7–9 hours a night
-
Train consistently (and intelligently)
-
Reduce alcohol and ultra-processed foods, not food groups
Your energy, digestion, and physique will improve — no starvation required.
